HOM

HOM (House of MATAHATI) is an independent art space consists of a gallery and studio facilities. located in Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.

Started in 2007, it is an artist-run initiative to provide a venue for events conducive to the development of local and regional art activities. One of HOM’s core objectives is to promote and nurture emerging artists through its MATAHATI Art Residency programme. As a platform to help artists, in the form of financial assistance or encouragement, the MATAHATI Art Fund and MATAHATI Art Award were established. Besides supporting home-grown talents, HOM facilitates a networking between its Southeast Asian counterparts through dialogues or joint-venture programmes, by organising exhibitions, such as the annual ‘Artriangle’, which invites artists from neighbouring countries to showcase their artworks in a major group show.

HOM is initiate by MATAHATI, a collective which was founded in 1993 by five Malaysian artists; Ahmad Fuad Osman, Ahmad Shukri Mohamed, Bayu Utomo Radjikin, Masnoor Ramli Mahmud and Hamir Soib @Mohamed. A familiar name in the Malaysian art scene, the MATAHATI group found recognition and success via its collaborative artistic practice as a group as well as individually.

MATAHATI ART RESIDENCY

MATAHATI ART RESIDENCY
MAR is a programme that consists of three (3) key residencies.

1) HOM Residency (HR)

HR is the gallery’s residency programme for emerging local artists either fresh graduates or self-taught. Under the mentorship of the MATAHATI art collective, artists-in-residence will be provided with art materials and a transportation allowance as a means to facilitate their studio practice at HOM.

A committed studio practice is crucial to the development of a young artist and HOM also makes this growth possible with constant support and the engagement of guest artists to guide HR’s artists with concept and technique.

The six-month residency has been running since 2008 and has proven to be a good platform for young artists to develop their art. All residencies culminate with an exhibition featuring the artworks produced during the residency. The programme is open to young artists below the age of 30.

2) SAGE Residency (Southeast Asia Art Group Exchange)

SAGE is a regional exchange residency programme co-organized by TENGGARA Artland (Indonesia) and Projectspace Pilipinas (Philippines).

SAGE takes in artists with at least five years of experience and the Southeast Asian group exchange enables Malaysian, Indonesian, and Filipino artists to foster and strengthen regional ties, as well as to network and establish a better understanding of their neighbours.

The residency entails 30-days each in Kuala Lumpur, Jogjakarta and Manila. During this time, artists-in-residences not only produce artworks for exhibitions in each city, but also partake in studio visits, gallery and art institution visits, as well as introductions to significant art collectors and art communities.

Aside from these physical dialogues, SAGE also fosters a visual dialogue, as artists from these three countries are encouraged to engage in cross-cultural meditations and to broach new visual languages in their works.

3) OPEN Residency (OR)

OR is the HOM’s final residency programme. Open to all international artists, HOM provides shared studio space, accommodation, and basic art materials for a period of 20 – 30 days.

Uniquely, artists are not required to mount an exhibition at the end of their residency unless they wish to, and should any OR artists-in-residence wish to exhibit elsewhere, HOM will facilitate this by extending support through its close relationships within the local and regional art scenes.

There are no specific requirements for artists wishing to apply for the OR and artists are encouraged to make direct inquiries with the gallery.
